C.A. “Bid” McDowell, 85 year old long time Mooreland resident, died Sunday, February 27, 2011 at his home in Mooreland. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at the Mooreland United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Mercer officiating. Interment will be in the Mooreland Cemetery with the United States Navy providing military graveside rites.
C.A. “Bid” McDowell was born June 2, 1925 to Earl Eugene and Tresa Agnes (Vogt) McDowell in Mooreland, Oklahoma. He grew up in the Curtis-Mooreland area and attended the Mooreland schools. He left school his senior year to join the Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific on the USS Eisner until his discharge in 1946. Bid married Edna Marie Jackson on September 16, 1947 in Canadian, Texas. They moved to Higgins, Texas where he began his career with Cities Service Gas Company. To this union, four children were born: Duane, Bobby, Darla and Brent. Edna died in 1981.
Bid and Leona Jordan were married on June 14, 1982 in Raton, New Mexico. They made their home in Mooreland and have lived there since that time. Bid retired from Cities Service in 1984 after 37 years of service.
After retirement Bid and Leona began 25 years of camping, fishing and enjoying bus tours around the United States. Bid continued to enjoy dancing, a special love of his which he began early in his life. The joy of his life was being at home with all of his family around him.
Bid was a member of the Christian Church and the Okie Tumbleweeds Camping Club.
He is survived by his wife Leona of the home; children, Darla and Dale Huffman, Duane and Sherry McDowell, Bobby McDowell, Brent and Pam McDowell, Gail Gerntrup, Kitty and Dr. Rocky Ferrell, Lynn and Cherie Jordan; one brother, Warren McDowell; sister Glenda Ingraham; 17 grandchildren, Bryan Huffman, Bendy Huffman, Kelsey Dahl and husband Jason, Jesse Huffman, Casey McDowell, Lindsey James and husband John, Cody McDowell, Bobbi Lynn Wolcott and husband Jared, Ethan McDowell, Tyler McDowell, Keith Roetzer and wife Andrea, Vanessa Whalen and husband Jay, Jennifer Gerntrup, Jessica Lorence and husband Jonas, Levi Ferrell and wife Sierra, Nick Pipkin and wife Kelsey, Neil Pipkin and wife Abby; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie McDowell, Bessie McDowell, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Tresa McDowell, his wife Edna McDowell, brothers, Everett McDowell, Edgar McDowell, Verle “Skeet” McDowell, Kenneth McDowell, sisters; Faye Berry and Thelma McDowell, son-in-law, Frank Gerntrup; sister-in-law, Gladys McDowell and brother-in-law, Walt Ingraham.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mooreland Senior Citizens Center or the American Cancer Society with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
